weird fiction rec list

a smattering of media that influences my art and my thoughts.

NOTE: while there is an overlap between weird fiction and metanarratives, i have tried to keep this list primarily to what has influenced the weirdness in my art

books:

  • house of leaves: a basic answer, to be certain; but you cannot deny that emerging from its labyrinthian narrative leaves you changed
  • xx: far more straightforward than many of the other options on this list, but holds the same place in my heart that HOL does
  • slaughterhouse-five: more absurdist than weird? certainly. but listen. billy pilgrim has come unstuck in time.
  • annihilation: there is a brightness within that floods the shadows with burning light. adam is the one who tastes of the fruit of knowledge, and eve follows where he will lead.

films:

  • solaris: stalker would have been a more obvious choice given annihilation's presence on the books list, but space has always been my first and deepest love.
  • daisies: lurid colors, excessive consumption, and slamming yourself hard against the boundaries of a constrictive society.
  • the wolf house: [thoughts coming after a rewatch]

television:

  • neon genesis evangelion: episode eighteen, life and death decisions. episodes twenty-five and twenty six, the ending world and the beast who shouted 'i' at the heart of the world.
  • twin peaks: season one, episode three: zen, or to catch a killer. season two, episode seven: lonely souls. the return, part eight.

theater:

  • theater is by nature a tricky medium to list here, as any production of any show can be made weird enough to count. in this case i'm considering work that is TEXTUALLY weird in a way accessible to you, the reader of this list; as opposed to thought where the PERFORMANCE was weird, which ends up being far more ephemeral.
  • hamletmachine: the most pretentious theater major thing about me is the pride i take in the staging of the final scene of this play i did for a class final project.
  • cloud 9: [thoughts to come.]
